This week I was going to leave death and destruction alone and post uplifting and happy images, but as I was looking for a couple of the above, I stumbled across these images of dead trees in yet another salt lake, or salt pan as many locals in the Mallee region of Northern Victoria refer to them. These obviously are more recent developments as the amount of decay of the dead timber is less advanced. The now broken down fence running through the foreground of the second image pretty conclusively proves that this saline soak developed after European settlers started to farm the area. How do I know this? If you’ve ever tried walking over this sort of ground, you would know, there is no way you could run a fence line over it. Hard white salty crust on top, break through that, and you will sink into the most vile black sticky black mud you can imagine.
