Low level aerial photo of a salt lake near Mildura in Far North Western Victoria, Australia. The landscape around this area of the Mallee is dotted with such Salt Lakes or often referred to as Salt Pans. Formed mostly in low lying areas in this semi arid region, some are as a result of irrigation drainage seeping into the area, others result from rising water tables caused by a number of factor both natural and man made. Only the most saline tolerant pants grow in close proximity to the lakes. Recently formed sailine ponds are often doted with skeletal remains of dead trees now encrusted with salt and other mineral leached from the surrounding soils.
